Dear Friends:
This is the latest news from my summer trip to Xalapa, and my visit to the shelter. Please view the powerpoint presentation (if it doesn't start automatically, click on view slide show in the powerpoint menu). The presentation will give you a sense of how the shelter operates and the wonderful and difficult work they are doing. You will read and see real life stories that these earth angels are facing everyday to be able to provide care to these also (furry) angels.
I can hardly describe with words what it feels like to be able to be face to face with real heroes of our times. It is sad when we are pulled into the collective mind and the only true heroes that our kids know are created just for entertainment. The whole world is changing right in front of our eyes and the violence we are exposed to is out of control, therefore my visit to the shelter was a ray of hope for my heart, which is why I want to share this information with you.
Ofelia and Martha are the founders of this beautiful place, and they believe that service is not a burden but a privilege. They are teaching compassion againts all odds--the government and the community offer little or no help. It is a big lesson of humanity for the rest of us. Both have full time jobs and they will spend the rest of the day and weekends providing care for the little ones. They have sold everything they own and spent every penny of their incomes for the maintenance of the shelter. They are trying to convince the Mexican government of Veracruz to create a law that will protect animal rights, and the most important thing, they are helping to create a better world for all of us. They are carrying the irresponsibility of a whole city. Taking care of almost 700 hundred little souls is not an easy task, they are in so much need! They don't complain, they just want to work hard to make this possible.
I went to the shelter to try to help and I ended up being the one who was helped, because there is no way you will be exposed to such a level of kindness and then really and truly not want to become a better human being.
